Let’s face it, following your normal exercise routine can be pretty hard during the summer. There’s way more temptation to hit that snooze button than make time for your morning workout. However, by the afternoon everyone would rather be enjoying the summer day than hitting the gym.

A balanced lifestyle is super important over the summer to help you feel re-energized when fall classes begin. If you’re working 40 hours a week, you might find that some days you value spending time with friends and family after work more than getting a workout in. It’s more important to have a happy and healthy summer than being able to say you worked out every single day.

However, we do have a few tips if you’re trying to maintain your workout routine and keep it exciting.

Try Something New

Take this summer as an opportunity to get out of your workout rut! See if ClassPass is offered in your area. This can be a great way to try out new studios and new types of classes without committing to a specific membership. Even if ClassPass isn’t an option, you’ll likely find tons of different exercise opportunities no matter where you are. By doing something you don’t normally do at Wake, you might just find something you love.

Beat the Heat

There’s nothing more miserable than working out in super hot and humid weather. If running or cycling outdoors is your exercise of choice, make sure you don’t do so midday! Try working out early in the morning or closer to dusk, opt for lightweight clothing, and make sure to bring plenty of water!

Hit the Water

From paddle boarding to kayaking there’s so many fun water sports to try this summer. Water activities are a great workout even it if feels like you’re just having fun. They are the perfect way to enjoy the sunshine while also getting in some exercise!

Use the Beach

The instability of the sand makes every exercise a balance workout. Try going for a run or doing a HIIT workout on the beach for the added challenge. While you’re there, maybe go for a swim too!

Relax

While balancing jobs, internships, friends, and family, it’s also important to think about yourself during the summer. The break from school life can be a great opportunity to relax and catch up on some much needed sleep. You might consider working yoga and / or meditation into your daily routine as well.

No matter what you’re doing this summer, make sure you’re taking care of yourself so you can come back to Wake ready to go in the fall!
