Student Employee Mission Statement

Campus Recreation is committed to providing meaningful employment experiences that help students develop valuable skills and advance their personal and professional goals.

Student Testimonials

It has placed me in a professional environment where I’m responsible for the wellbeing and safety of others. This kind of responsibility helps you to mature and grow from hard leadership, risk management, and group dynamic skills, and more soft skills like how to bring a group together and how to make people feel included and like they belong.

Connor Kim (’26)

Outdoor Pursuits Staff

Thanks to my time spent as an Intramural Sports referee, I now have a job as a basketball referee outside of Wake, which is great! I believe that working for Campus Rec has given me thick skin, and I am ready to face the world ahead of me. I have become confident and secure in myself and my decision-making.

Kate Souther (’25)

Intramural Sports Official

Campus Recreation has been instrumental in preparing me for life beyond college by trusting me with real responsibilities and leadership opportunities. From managing trip logistics to ensuring participant safety, I’ve gained hands-on experience in decision-making, teamwork, and adaptability. I’ve also developed critical skills in professional communication and conflict resolution – skills that extend far beyond outdoor recreation and will serve me in any career. The confidence and leadership I’ve gained here will stay with me long after I leave Wake Forest.

Jack Martin (’26)

Outdoor Pursuits Staff

It has helped me develop valuable skills that will benefit me beyond Wake Forest, including leadership, communication, and time management. Teaching classes has strengthened my ability to engage and motivate diverse groups, adapt to different situations, and provide clear instruction—skills that are essential in any professional setting. Additionally, balancing this job with my academic responsibilities has taught me discipline and organization, which will be crucial in my future career.

Lourdes Lopez (’26)

Group Fitness Instructor

Not only have I exercised responsibility and accountability through working with Campus Rec, but I have also learned how to effectively balance my school work, on campus job, and social life. I feel that the professional standards set at Aquatics, as well as team-leading skills from trainings will help me wherever I end up.

Meredith Janay (’26)

Lifeguard

Apart from teaching me what it means to be a professional and what it means to manage staff members, it has shown me how important it is to be able to work with an array of personalities on your staff and participants who are all differently invested in the sport. It has shown me that I need to alter my scale of judgement and what it means to communicate with these individuals. As, it is important for me to look at their emotions and what they are trying to put forward in the particular scenario at hand.

Vir Gupta (’25)

Sport Program Supervisor

I’ve improved a lot of soft and hard professional skills. Communication, team building, leadership, and organization are some to name only a few. I’ve built upon my time management and tactical working skills, as well as, my ability to be a leader and a participant within an organization. Through increasing my responsibilities as a Program Assistant, I’ve navigated the distinction of once being a regular student employee to now a more advanced role, which was challenging but overall positive for me as I think toward my post-graduate career.

Christine Cleveland (’25)

Program Assistant, Aquatics

I think employment with Campus Recreation better prepared me for life after Wake because it taught me time management, communication, and management skills. It has also helped me with job prospects because I am able to talk about projects I worked on an impacts that I have made.

Gabbie Bayard (’25)
